Site Location and Description: Drive one mile up the Buttes Pass dirt road in Anza Borrego State Park to a fork, and continue to the left up Borrego Mountain Wash. Go another mile to the parking area for The Slot. 4×2 stock vehicles should be able to drive to the trailhead at the end of the sandy dirt road. Park at the flat area in front of what looks like a miniature version of the badlands. You have reached the Slot Canyon area. Mark your entrance, as there are many ways down into the Slot and it will help on your return. Walk a short distance and you will enter the Slot. The sandstone canyon walls get taller and more animated-looking in their form as you go. This is an amazingly fun and interesting hike into the bowels of the earth. The Narrows is a great place to take kids, take photos, videos, and explore.
Overland Slot Trail Drive: If you have come with your high-clearance 4WD and are looking for some overland fun, head north out of the parking area on a single-lane, sandy road. Bear left at a fork, then left at a T-junction. You will have gone approximately two miles by this point. Follow the trail along the top of the ridge to the end to an overlook. Ahead of you, you should see a sign saying “one way” and a stepped and rutted sandy hill heading east. This is the difficult portion of the trail. If you decide to descend, then we recommend you scout it out first to pick your line. If you have a spotter, then be sure they are in a safe place out of harm’s way, since this is a steep, rutted and sandy hill, and spotters and cars can slide. Air down your tires, go into L4 to help slow your descent and disconnect your sway bar if you can. Tip: Remember on steep sandy descents, do not lock your brakes as you will slide. Keep facing directly downhill and avoid getting sideways.
- The Slots (Lower Kyle Canyon) is a 4.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Las Vegas, Nevada and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and horses and is best used from September until May. Dogs and horses are also able to use this trail. Length 4.6 miElevation gain 679 ftRoute type Out & back.
- After you park in the dirt area, head in the direction away from the road. There you will see a trailhead. Continue on the trail away from the road until you see a trail that forks to the left. Follow the trail to your left which will lead you to the slot canyon. Follow the canyon as far as you would like to go.
- This is technically a slot canyon, but rather wide. Easy walking, easy to get to from the Skutumpah Road (there is a small sign by the road). Looks like a spot that ranchers would have used to pen cattle. When we went into Lick, the sun was going down and we saw a large.
TAP NOTE: If you have no experience in sand, then do NOT attempt this hill. Be safe. Go slow and easy.…..for the experienced driver, this hill is a BLAST.
Once you get to the bottom head north through a moderately rocky area in Borrego Mountain Wash. Turn left at a rock that looks like a face, then bear right in the San Felipe Wash. From here you can either go about 4 miles and turn right on Buttes Pass back to Highway 78.
The Slot Canyon Trail in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, known simply as “The Slot,” is an easy out-and-back hike, that winds through a deep and extremely narrow siltstone canyon (just wide enough at points for a single person to pass). Squeezing through the slot is definitely an adventure and a fun way to experience the maze-like quality of Anza Borrego’s desert canyons.
As you approach the trailhead (GPS: 33.182039,-116.214071), it’s worth keeping a close eye on kids, because the canyon drops off steeply in places along the approach trail. The trail starts at the top of the parking lot, in the direction you would go if the road had continued up the hill, and begins with a steep descent into the canyon. Once you’re at the bottom, head left onto the trail.
The mile-long trail drops about 100 feet in elevation as you pass through the canyon. The trail gets so narrow in places, that you may need to take off any backpacks to squeeze through. Kids (and the young at heart) will love exploring the canyon, as there is a surprising geological twist around each corner.

After less than a mile, the slot canyon will open up and you’ll come to a truck trail. You can follow this trail for a bit and then take a left on a trail that will bring you back along the rim of the canyon to the trailhead (which adds about a mile to the hike). Alternatively, we recommend you return back through the slot trail, as it’s more interesting.

Getting to the slot canyon trailhead doesn’t require a four-wheel-drive vehicle, unless it has rained recently, in which case, check-in at the visitor’s center about road conditions. The slot is about a 20-minute drive southeast of Borrego Springs, and a little tricky to find. The gravel road to the trailhead is easy to miss, and the tiny road sign doesn’t help matters. Even though we set the mileage tracker on our Jeep, we blew right by it the first time and had to circle back.
